* This above all…..
There was little to admire from either side in the first 45 minutes as both struggled to master the tricky Trico Stadium all-weather surface. Not that the surface was to blame but a light drizzle made it extra slick and progress beyond mid-field was quickly snuffed by two alert defences. Lewis Wilson’s decisive goal on 73 minutes and the sending off of the Reds’ Lewis Wright on 80 minutes meant another 3 points for Town consolidating 3rd position in the league.
Town was once again unchanged with Will Grocott returning to the bench following illness. Redditch kicked off towards the Sallie Swan Stand with Town having the advantage of the slope. There was little to enthuse but the Reds dominated possession and looked dangerous at set pieces.
Stratford thought they had the lead on 17 minutes, when, a low Isaac cross was turned home by Nabil Shariff after good play down the left. The assistant referee’s flag was quickly up judging Isaac offside in the build up. On 22 Jordan Williams was nearly caught out by the lively Danico Johnson but Williams recovered superbly. And the Reds was nearly in front 2 minutes later when a long throw in from the left found the Town defence flat footed. Michael Nelson’s fierce drive struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety. For Town Shariff won a corner left on 40 minutesand Oulton’s cross saw Skendi heading narrowly over.
The second half saw Town take the game to the Reds. Oulton was winning everything in mid-field and Shariff’s hold up play was excellent in allowing mid-field runners to pressurize the Redditch defence. A Shariff cross on 52 minutes caught everyone out and smart play by Skendi, Wilson and Oulton nearly carved the home side’s defence apart. Oulton’s shot was comfortably saved by Reece Francis.
73 minutes saw the deadlock broken. The persistent Cox won the ball on the right and turning inside onto his left his cross found Oulton at the far post. Oulton quickly returned it Lewis Wilson who, ‘poaching’ deep in the Redditch area, netted in quick fashion.
The other defining moment of the half and game came on 80 minutes when Lewis Wight clattered Ross Oulton. A melee followed and after a quick deliberation, match official, Steve Durnall, sent of the Redditch defender. Richard Bachalar and Kynan Isaac received ‘yellows’ for their part in the melee.
Daniel Preston replaced the injured Oulton and there were scares at both ends of the pitch but there was a feeling that Town had just done enough and, indeed, they had!
For Town Oulton, Jordan Williams and Shariff shone and it was good to see the versatile Lewis Wilson back on the score sheet. There was a large following of Town fans at the Trico and it would be good if the wider Stratford community could recognise the team’s achievements by coming out in numbers for the next home fixture against St. Ives Saturday 02 February.
