There was joy unconfined for the home side at the end of the evening following an enthralling encounter of cup football. The Town boys were not to be denied against a spirited and competitive Cinderford side. The Foresters came into the tie in a rich vein of form as they vie for a play off place in the EvoStik Division One South. Stratford with similar ambitions for the Premier Division chose to rest Taylor, Grocott and Cox but still fielded a strong eleven. Jimmy Fry settled into the back line alongside Jordan Williams while Wilson Carvalho had a roving role supporting Albi Skendi and Mo Sebbeh in midfield.
Town dominated the early possession as they played a pressing game with a sharper more progressive style of play. Skendi and Sebbeh dominated midfield throughout. As early as 6 minutes Skendi played Isaac in on the left with the wingman’s shot narrowly missing the far post. When Shariff was fouled just outside the area on 15 minutes it was Carvalho who stepped up for free kick duty. His shot smashed against the angle of upright and crossbar before bouncing to safety. On 22 minutes following another Town free kick and Sebbeh found Creaney who crashed a shot against the other upright.
At the other end a Sheehan cross found Richard Greave whose glancing header was narrowly wide. Later Jordan Williams was brave in blocking a Matt MacDonald effort. Half time and it was difficult to believe there were no goals to show for the collective endeavours.
It was Town kicking towards the Knights’ Lane who thought they broken the deadlock on 46 much to the delight of the young Stratford‘Ultra’ fans. Shariff was through and calmly finished but the offside flag was raised in the act of shooting. The goal when it came was a beauty. Creaney on 61 minutes hit a delightful cross field ball taking out the left hand side of the Cinderford defence. Wilson strode forward before playing the perfect low cross for Isaac to convert from close range. Cinderford responded on 67 when Hunt headed narrowly wide from a Greave cross.
Taylor, Grocott and Cox all left the bench to replace Creaney, Wilson and Isaac as Town continued to have the better of things. Taylor and Skendi got into good positions but couldn’t finish and late on Grocott opened up the opposition but his cross evaded everyone. There was one late scare for Town deep into added time. Williams conceded a free kick on the right and earned a yellow. Lorcan Sheehan’s free kick was floated to the far post where Ross Etheridge rose majestically to claim the ‘pig’s bladder’ and so end the proceedings.
Gary Clarke from sponsors CSS Security Services was on hand to present the magnificent cup to Jimmy Fry. Chairman Terry Barrett and David Knight from the EvoStik Southern Central League assisted.
Whatever the outcome of Town’s final run of matches this has been a magnificent, record-breaking season for Thomas Baillie’s team. From an unpromising beginning to cup winners and play-off contenders this has been achieved with a minimum of fuss and angst. Lowestoft and Biggleswade await!
