Captain Jimmy Fry had a moment to savour on Saturday afternoon as his long distance strike proved to be the difference in a hard fought 1-0 win at home to Rushden & Diamonds.

The skipper was delighted with the three points and was quick to thank Town’s loyal support for spurring the team on to victory at the weekend.

“The fans were fantastic on Saturday,” said Jimmy. “When we are on top, they got behind us but even towards the end, they gave us that extra five or ten percent to see us over the line.

“With it being such a big game, we had to make that home advantage count and we did. The home support was excellent.

“We’ll be looking for them to stick with us and hopefully come the end of the season, we will be able to give them what they deserve.”

Stratford’s spectators were treated to a performance of true grit and determination from their side on Saturday.

“Saturday’s game was probably the best it has been for a long while,” said Jimmy. “I thought the performance for the whole ninety minutes was excellent.

“I felt it was the best football we have played and out of the two teams, we were the ones to create the better chances.

“They had a little spell towards the end, when they were lumping balls into the box but that was expected. It’s typical that the losing team throws caution to the wind and goes for it.

“But overall, I think we definitely got what we deserved and it was really pleasing to have a really good whole team performance.”

Jimmy was the match winner on the day. Goals are something the skipper has been looking to add to his displays.

“It’s an area of the game which I am not known for,” he admitted. “Goal scoring is definitely something I can get a lot better at.

“Funnily enough, I’d had a chat with a few of the lads and talked about stop trying to be too precise. At times I should put my laces through it and just hit it.

“I’d chatted with Mikey (Taylor) at half-time and it just so happens he was the one who laid the ball back to me.

“It fell quite nicely and as soon as I hit it, I knew it was going in. It makes a nice change from doing all the dirty work, to pop up with the winner.

“It was a great feeling but hopefully we won’t have to rely too much on my goals in the run in.”

Talking of the games ahead, Jimmy is not lingering too long on his moment in the spotlight and is already focused on Stratford’s next opponent.

“With winning, it gives the whole place a lift,” said Stratford’s skipper. “It’s amazing what three points can do.

“Coalville is a massive game, it’s huge,” he said. “They have a couple of games in hand on us, so we will be looking to extend the gap between us and them to six points.

“Hopefully the win at the weekend can kick us on at this crucial stage in the season. Coalville is the start of a run of three or four games against teams in and around us.

“Let’s hope we can get points on the board and get those all-important victories to propel us towards the play offs and ultimately, promotion.”
