Former Bluenose takes on Town Ladies
Having joined Town Ladies as coach only just before Christmas Ian Clarkson found himself in the 'hot seat' after the resignation of Ross Thorpe due to family commitments.
Ian holds a UEFA B licence and is currently working towards his UEFA A licence. He is also an FA tutor. Ian also turned out for Town at Masons Road for Ian Britton.
Ian's first job was to take charge on Sunday where Town won an incident packed match 4-3.
Ian made nearly 400 football league appearances during spells at Birmingham City, Stoke City, Northampton Town before turning out on the Non League circuit. Solihull born Ian Clarkson began his football playing career in 1987 as a YTS trainee with Birmingham City, the club he had supported since childhood, making his first team debut in September 1988 as a 17-year-old in the League Cup tie against Aston Villa making his Football League debut a month later. He signed professionally for Blues in December 1988. In 1991 he played in Birmingham's winning side that captured the Leyland DAF Cup. The following season he led the Blues to promotion from the Third Division while still aged just 21, an achievement Clarkson considers to be the highlight of his playing career. Former Manchester United Striker and Birmingham manager Lou Macari brought Clarkson to Championship side Stoke City in September 1993. Clarkson spent three seasons at Stoke before moving onto League Two side Northampton Town having turned down the offer of a new contract with the Staffordshire club.In August 1998, Clarkson's professional career was cut short at the tender age of 29 after he suffered a badly-broken tibia in a match against Lincoln City.
