• A snapper-up of unconsidered trifles……..
As we reach the thrilling climax of record-breaking season for the ‘Boys in Blue’ the Royston fixture looked like a potential ‘banana skin’ in thwarting the club’s ambitions. If it was, it was neatly side-stepped as Town eased to victory over ‘The Crows.’ The home fixture against fixture against Biggleswade now looks pivotal in our play-off hopes with the CSS League Cup Final against Cinderford as a tasty appetiser.
As it was goals from Wilson and Taylor at critical moments in the game ensured a comfortable three points. The ‘fun’ started in the warm up when Cox was injured with the rested Lewis Wilson taking his place at right wing back. Other changes saw Jamie McAteer and Jordan Williams return to the starting line up and Taylor replace Creaney. McAteer’s odyssey was to prove short-lived as he hobbled off after 8 minutes to be replaced by man of the match, Mo Sebbeh.
It was Stratford who was to dominate the first half being first to everything all over the park. Skendi and Williams dominated at the back with Ross Etheridge in imperious form. Fisher and Wilson oozed class left and right with Fry and Sebbeh bossing midfield. Grocott, Isaac, Carvalho and Taylor tested The Crows defence throughout.
On 7 minutes Taylor latched onto a long ball from Fisher lobbing the ball just over the advancing keeper. Next it was Grocott feeding Carvalho (12 minutes) whose shot looped off a defender for a corner. From the corner the ball fell to Jimmy Fry who shot for goal. A neat, headed flick from Lewis Wilson provided the decisive finish for his eighth goal of the campaign. Surely all doubters silenced now!
Isaac and Taylor were to go close (18 and 21) and one goal seemed a poor dividend for an excellent first half.
Taylor was to head over early in the second half before opening his account on 53 minutes. From a Town free kick Fry won the ball and then played it forward to Taylor who finished from close range. Almost immediately Royston replied. Devante Stanley got the better of Cody Fisher and his cross caused mayhem. It was a wonder to all that a goal wasn’t forthcoming.
On 61 minutes Wilson conceded a soft penalty just inside the area and expert dead-ball Crow, Tom Knowles, strode forward with purpose. He smashed his shot low to Etheridge’s right and for the second game in a row the Town custodian was equal to the task.
Shariff and Creaney replaced Isaac and Grocott as the game petered out. On 85 Creaney and Carvalho combined and Sebbeh might have done better from a good position.
This is already a record-breaking season and a cup win and play-off spot would be a fitting reward for an outstanding effort from the Board, Management and all who work on behalf of the club.
